This project was essentially an introduction to the art of photography. Most important was understanding the concept of exposure and how it is determined by ISO, shutter speed and aperture. Once I had grasped what these terms meant I began to learn how they can be used to give you complete creative freedom over the outcome of a photograph. My research led me into an interest for Street photography, with artists such as Vivian Maer and Markus Hartel showing me that within everyday life in an urban environment you can capture spectacular visuals and compositions. I initially struggled with using the DSLR as I was trying to shoot in manual mode, which meant that I was in full creative control. What I found however was that life was moving too quickly around me and by the time I had set up the exposure how I wanted, the moment I wanted to capture had passed. By switching to aperture priority mode however, I found that the process became a lot smoother whilst not largely restricting my own creative input. I also began learning how to use Adobe Raw to manipulate the photographs that I took to further enhance them and shape them into effective visual pieces. This project has led me to develop a new interest in photography and I hope to develop my knowledge and skill within this subject area further in later projects. I think that by learning to produce aesthetically pleasing photographs I can use them within my graphic design work as well. During this project I have struggled with my time management and this has caused an array of issues. I definitely feel that this is an area I will need to improve upon in further projects.
